ATLAS CHEETAH C SERIAL NUMBER 324 (SPOTTY)
CHEETAH DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND
The Atlas Cheetah programme grew out of South Africa's requirement for a modern fighter and strike aircraft during the 1980s. There was a need for more advanced aircraft to attain an edge over the ever more sophisticated Soviet aircraft such as the MiG-23 being supplied to Angolan and Cuban forces and used against the South African Forces during the Border War.
CHEETAH E SERIAL 842 (C/N BB-1806)
South Africa performed an update to their Mirages along the lines of that of the Kfir and incorporating some Israeli-built kit. In 1986, Atlas Aircraft Corporation of South Africa (later Atlas aviation and finally Denel Aviation) rolled out a refurbished Mirage III machine named the "Cheetah". Equipped with a Snecma Atar 9K50-engine, Mirage IIIR2Z 855, was chosen as the basis for the upgrade.

The SAAF was severely hampered by economic sanctions imposed against the country during 1977 and had to rely on a limited number of outdated aircraft for its primary mission, the Defence of the RSA. During this same period, forces hostile to the RSA in neighbouring countries continued to be supplied with the most modern and state-of-the-art Soviet and Eastern Bloc weaponry and aircraft.
